How Aromatherapy works

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils which are prepared from the extracts of various parts of plants, grasses or bushes such as  leaves, flowers, fruits, bark, wood, needles, twigs, roots, resins and shrubs from all over the world. Each essential oil has its own unique medicinal qualities, characteristics and therapeutic effects.

The essential oils have very positive and powerful effect on the body, mind and spirit for enhancing and healing. Essential oils, when applied to the skin, are absorbed into the body fluids and stimulate the immune system.

Massage at a spa, with essential oils is a special way to enjoy aromatherapy. Along with the benefits of massage, you also gain by the therapeutic properties of the essential oils. At day spas, massage combined with essential oils, has a revitalizing effect on the skin, muscles, nerves, glands and all the organs of the body.

Each essential oil is unique and has a varied number of properties and benefits. Some essential oils increase the circulation and eliminate toxins, others increase the growth of new body cells, thus helping the body to heal itself naturally.

Another form of absorption is when the aroma of these essential oils are inhaled. This can be most efficiently done when the essential oils are diffused in a vaporizer, added to your bathwater or its perfume is inhaled from a tissue. The aroma released from the essential oils, sends a direct signal to that particular part of the brain, which is the centre of emotions and memory, and it also stimulates the senses. This is the reason why these essential oils have the power to sway our moods and affect our general state of mind.

It is well-known that essential oils influence our emotions. Aromatherapy helps to lift depression, soothe irritable nerves and generally encourage a better state of mind. It has been discovered that relaxing oils such as Lavender, Sweet Marjoram, Clary Sage, Sandalwood, Frankincense and Ylang Ylang work by stimulating a neuro-chemical called serotonin that is naturally produced by the body to help relaxation and induce sleep. It is this action that makes these oils so invaluable in alleviating long-term conditions such as insomnia, stress and tension.

People practicing aromatherapy have always believed that the sense of well being produced after using essential oils in a treatment can help to boost the immune system.

Aromatherapy excels as a form of complementary and alternative medicine, helping and bringing relief to millions of people.
